Non-Exemptible Registration Requirements


Registered Intern Opticians

The following are non-exemptible (apply with no exceptions) registration requirements for a certificate of registration as a registered intern optician:

  1. For applicants who DO NOT currently hold a certificate of registration as an intern optician or equivalent certificate from another Canadian province:
    1. Successful completion and graduation from an accredited program (Seneca College Opticianry Program, Georgian College Opticianry Program, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Optical Sciences Program or Douglas College Dispensing Optician Program);

      Or:

    2. Successful completion and graduated from an unaccredited program (Canadian or International) in opticianry or a related discipline and satisfy the Registration Committee that he/she has a level of knowledge and skill in the practice of opticianry that is equivalent to that acquired by graduates of an accredited education program by successfully completing the College’s Prior Learning and Assessment Recognition program;

      And, for all applicants (from accredited or unaccredited programs whether in Canada or International):

    3. The applicant must provide a written declaration that he or she is engaged, or intends to be engaged, in the practice of opticianry in Ontario

  2. For applicants who DO currently hold a certificate of registration as an intern optician or equivalent certificate from another Canadian province:
    1. The applicant must provide one or more certificates or letters or other evidence satisfactory to the Registrar or a panel of the Registration Committee establishing that they are in good standing as an intern optician in every jurisdiction where they hold an out-of-province certificate.
