Training and Education
Applicants seeking registration as Opticians in Ontario must have graduated from an opticianry program that is recognized by the College of Opticians of Ontario. Applicants who have not graduated from such a program will have to apply for PLAR (prior learning assessment and recognition).
The following educational institutions offer opticianry programs recognized by the College of Opticians. These programs comply with the College’s entry-to-practice competencies and professional standards and have received the NACOR accreditation:
Georgian College (2-year full-time program)
Seneca College (4-year part-time program & 2-year full-time program)
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology – NAIT - Eyeglasses and Advance Practice Contact Lenses (2-year + 2-year distance & on-line learning program)
Douglas College - Dispensing Optician and Advanced Contact Lenses and Optical Technologies Program
After graduating, the applicant must pass a registration examination before he/she can register with the College of Opticians of Ontario and use the title Registered Optician.
Opticians are long-standing members of the health care delivery team in a field for which there is a growing universal need. Registered Opticians may dispense eyeglasses, contact lenses or sub-normal vision devices independently or as part of the eye care team.
