If you are interested in running in the upcoming election of members to
Council you must meet the eligibility requirements as detailed in the Bylaw
and follow the nomination instructions to ensure the acceptance of your
nomination.
By participating in the election, either as a candidate or through voting,
you are influencing the future of opticianry practice and regulation. By
standing for election, members have the opportunity to directly foster the
continued growth of the profession by bringing their knowledge, skills and
ability to Council.
Every currently registered Member or Life Member is eligible to run or vote
in the Electoral District in which they reside. If the member does not reside
in Ontario but is engaged in the practice of Opticianry in Ontario they can
vote in the district where they practice. Members elect candidates for the
electoral district in which they reside.
All Information on the election process, eligibility to run/vote, nominations,
terms and districts can be found in the current By-law. You can find
an electronic copy of the By-law on our website in the Resource Room.
Please visit the College website for updated election information. Should
you have any questions about the election or the nomination process please
contact Belinda Forrest, Manager of Professional Programs at 416-368-3616 ext. 213 or bforrest@coptont.org .
Council and Committees
The Council of the College of Opticians of Ontario (COO) is the governing
body of the College. The College’s Council and committees are currently
composed of eight Opticians elected by the Membership and
between five and seven non-optician public members appointed by the
Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario. The opticians are nominated and elected
by their peers. Members are elected to serve three-year terms of office.
Members of the Council and statutory committees make decisions that are
in the public interest, are important to Opticians, and further the COO’s
mandate of public protection. Council Members oversee the affairs of the
COO and through the committees of the COO, register COO Members,
maintain high standards of professional ethics, monitor standards of practice,
manage quality assurance, continuing education and sexual abuse prevention
programs for our profession and administer, fair, open and honest
complaint and discipline procedures. The work of the Council helps to
shape the future of self-regulation.
