Jurisprudence Tool

The Jurisprudence Tool has been developed by the College as an educational resource for Registered Opticians. The purpose of the Jurisprudence Tool is to help members acquire knowledge about the laws, standards, and guidelines that affect opticianry in Ontario.

A portion of the Jurisprudence Tool is mandatory for all Registered Opticians. It is mandatory that all Registered Opticians complete Chapter 1: Professional Boundaries and Sexual Abuse Prevention once every three years.

Chapter 2: Record Keeping, Confidentiality and Privacy is optional, and members are not required to submit proof of completion to the College.

The Jurisprudence Tool consists of a handbook (pdf) and two online multiple-choice tests.

Chapter 1: Professional Boundaries and Sexual Abuse Prevention

The purpose of the Professional Boundaries and Sexual Abuse Prevention module is to assist members in understanding the concepts of professional boundaries and their importance. The module also helps members develop ways to prevent the crossing of professional boundaries, including those related to sexual abuse, and to recognize how the College addresses them.

Registered Opticians are required to complete Chapter 1: Professional Boundaries and Sexual Abuse Prevention once every three years.

New members are required to complete the Jurisprudence Tool within 12 months of registration with the College.

Chapter 2: Record Keeping, Confidentiality and Privacy

The purpose of the Record Keeping, Confidentiality and Privacy module is to assist members in understanding the concepts of record keeping, confidentiality and privacy as well as their importance. The module also helps members develop practical skills for making, maintaining, and using and disclosing patient records.

Chapter 2: Record Keeping, Confidentiality and Privacy is an optional module, and members are not required to submit proof of completion to the College.

Members may wish to use Chapter 2: Record Keeping, Confidentiality and Privacy toward their self-directed Quality Assurance requirements. Once a member completes the module, they can download a completion certificate that they may use as proof of 2 hours of self-directed continuing education, once every three years. To do so, members must record the activity on Form 3 of their Professional Portfolio and ensure a learning goal is created that is connected to this activity.
