Training and Education

Applicants seeking registration as Opticians in Ontario must have a diploma in opticianry from an educational institution that is recognized by the College of Opticians of Ontario.

The following educational institutions offer opticianry programs recognized by the College of Opticians that have been approved by the Ontario Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities. These recognized programs comply with the College’s entry-to-practice competencies and professional standards:

Georgian College (2-year full-time program)

Seneca College (4-year part-time program)

After graduating, a candidate must pass a registration examination before he/she can register with the College of Opticians of Ontario and use the title Registered Optician.

Opticians are long-standing members of the health care delivery team in a field for which there is a growing universal need. Registered Opticians may dispense eyeglasses, contact lenses or sub-normal vision devices independently or as part of the eye care team.
