Quality Assurance Program Overview

The Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) requires each Health Regulatory College to develop and administer a Quality Assurance Program to assure the quality of the practice of the profession and to promote continuing competence among the members.

The mandate of the Quality Assurance Committee is:
  • To administer and monitor the Quality Assurance Program prescribed in regulations
  • To evaluate Continuing Education activities for credit assignment
  • The Committee also administers the Peer Assessment Component of the Quality Assurance Program

In accordance with the Quality Assurance Regulation set out under the Opticianry Act, 1991, every Optician shall participate in the Quality Assurance Program and fulfill its requirements. The College of Opticians administers its Quality Assurance Program on a three-year cycle, individual to each member. Please refer to our Credit Cycles page for further details.

Update on the New Quality Assurance Program

Important: The College's existing Quality Assurance Program remains in effect until members are notified that the proposed changes to the Quality Assurance Regulation are passed by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

The College is implementing a New Quality Assurance program comprised of three components.

When will the revised program go into effect?
The College anticipates the new QA Program will be implemented in 2012, pending the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care passing the proposed changes to the regulation specific to Quality Assurance (Ontario Regulation 219/94, Part III Quality Assurance). Members will start their Quality Assurance Program materials when the revised QA Regulation is passed. The College is anticipating the Regulations will be passed in 2012. Members will be notified with direction upon passing of the proposed changes to the Quality Assurance regulation. In the interim, members are expected to continue collecting 30 CE credits as per their cycle under the existing program. A transitional plan has been established and will be communicated to members upon launching the program.
